Product Description

The Instrument Innovations Trombone Ax Handle is one of those deceptively simple accessories that transforms how your horn feels in your hands. Designed to redistribute the weight of your trombone from the smaller wrist muscles to the stronger muscles of the arm, it minimizes fatigue and tension while improving control and stability—especially over long rehearsals or extended playing sessions.

Each handle is designed and crafted by master machinist Mike Olsen, whose combination of engineering precision and musician-focused design sets this product apart. Made from nickel-plated aluminum, the Ax Handle maintains tonal clarity and balance without adding noticeable weight. The fully adjustable “S” or “L” frame design allows you to position the handle higher or lower to find your personal sweet spot. Installation is simple—no technician required—and once secured, the set screw holds the brace solidly in place for consistent, worry-free use.

The handle mounts between the F-attachment and bell brace (or the hand brace, depending on your setup) and includes everything required for installation: a 5/32″ hex tool, two spacers, a flexible chrome wrench, and three handle cushions in different densities to fine-tune comfort. You can also add an extra Ax Clamp (sold separately) to create a second Ax Handle assembly for another horn or alternate setup.

Fits a wide range of models including Bach, Shires, Greenhoe, Dillon Bass, King, Olds Vintage P24G, Muck Brass Bass, Yamaha 822/613H/620/682/620G/682G, Getzen 3047/3508/1052/1062, Jupiter XO1240/1242, Courtois AC550BHR/AC430/NYBHR/440/455, 385/420/480B, and Alessi AX Cross Brace.

If you happen to order the wrong version, TromboneLAB will gladly help you get the right one by offering exchanges or a refund of the purchase price.

TromboneLAB’s Take

Why we like it:
I use the Ax Handle on my own horn every day, and honestly, I can’t play my best without it. It changes how the instrument feels in my hand—smoother, more balanced, and more natural. I love that it’s fully adjustable, so I can always find that perfect “sweet spot” where the horn feels like it was built around me. If I need to make a small tweak, a simple turn of a screw is all it takes. It’s comfortable, solid, and beautifully made—clean, polished, and refined in every detail. Mike Olsen really knows how to bring together form and function in a way that just makes sense for players. If you’ve ever fought the ergonomics of the instrument, experienced physical tension, or struggled to find a natural grip, the Ax Handle will completely transform your comfort and connection to the instrument. I highly recommend it!
