What’s it like?
Slide-O-Mix Classic delivers a feel very similar to Rapid Comfort: smooth, stable, forgiving, and remarkably versatile. The difference is that instead of a pre-mixed one-step formula, the original two-part system gives you direct control over the final feel of the slide.
One of the first things you’ll notice is its adaptability. By adjusting the ratio of the two components, players can fine-tune the balance of speed, stability, cushioning, and responsiveness to match their instrument and personal preferences. This flexibility is one of the reasons the original Slide-O-Mix system has remained a favorite among serious players for decades.
Like its one-step counterpart, the lubricant creates a slick, durable film that performs beautifully on a wide range of trombone slides. It is forgiving enough to help smooth out minor wear and inconsistencies while still performing exceptionally well on slides with very tight tolerances.
A light mist of water takes the feel to another level. The slide becomes noticeably quicker and more responsive, and refreshing the action is often as simple as adding a little more water. How do I apply it?
Clean and dry the inner tubes first. Apply a generous drop from the small bottle to each stocking, then work the slide through its full range several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.
Next, apply a small amount from the large bottle near the upper end of each inner tube and allow it to run partway down the slide. Assemble the slide and work it from 1st position to 7th position several times to distribute the lubricant and establish an even lubricating film.
Apply a light mist of water and continue working the slide until the action feels smooth and responsive. If the slide feels slow, heavy, or draggy, wipe away some of the excess lubricant and try again. You’ll usually find that less lubricant is needed than you might expect.
The manufacturer’s recommended ratios work exceptionally well on most slides, but one of the biggest advantages of the Classic formula is the ability to customize the feel. Experimentation is encouraged. Adding slightly more of the large bottle generally produces a slicker, faster feel, while adjusting the balance between the two components can help fine-tune the response to match your instrument and playing preferences.
Once you’ve found the mixture your slide likes best, it’s easy to reproduce the results. A fresh mist of water is often all that’s needed to restore the slide’s performance.
This is a synthetic lubricant, which means that it plays well with others. While we always recommend removing old lubricants from any slide before applying new ones, in our testing, we have found this lubricant to work just fine without excessive cleaning first. Simply wipe off the inner tubes and apply the lubricant. If you find this yields less than desirable results, swab the inside of the outer tubes and reapply.
Reapply only when the slide starts to feel dry or loses its smooth response. In normal use, a single application lasts a long time.
